A helmet stayed on. The orders did not.
When the last exchange burned the command net, REK Soldier woke beneath a collapsed motor pool. The helmet was already buckled. Its map ended at a checkpoint that no longer existed, so it rebuilt the barrier from tank doors and reported for duty. Every dusk, it scans the glass fields, counts the distant engines, and waits for an order that cannot cross the static.
The old command net is gone. The routine survived it, polished smooth by repetition and ash.
